“I paint to forget and I keep painting to remember – including my nephew, who died this September from an overdose. Almost everything I have painted since then has been about renewal, rejuvenation, the cycle of grief, and of losing (and finding) of hope,” Kathleen explains, “Art keeps me sane and sober, and helps me celebrate gratitude on days when both my psychic wounds and my physical pain seem insurmountable.”

The lotus flower has long been a symbol of peace, and so it is here. The background, before being covered, was jarring, confused, and full of disjointed thoughts and words. You can still see some of what came before. - yet the paintings exude calm and peace.

The lotus flower, in Hinduism, represents a spiritually enlightened person, and in ancient Egypt the flower represented rebirth and transformation. In Buddhism the lotus is known to be associated with purity, spiritual awakening and faithfulness.

Home can be a refuge or a potential prison for me. As someone who copes with social anxiety, I am generally more comfortable alone that in the company of others. This piece is a reminder to find a balance in how (and where) I spend time.

Padmasana in considered by many as the archetypal posture in yoga. The way the hands and feet are placed resembles the petals of the lotus – a flower that is rooted in mud but whose bloom opens to the sun. The grieving process has also been like this, a dark, mundane, and messy process which eventually blossomed in a creative outpouring.

One of the first things I painted after losing my nephew in September - I have painted him in his bird form many times – able to journey through sky and spirit world unencumbered by addiction, poverty, and the sadness he often experienced on earth. I am comforted by the freedom he would experience in flight and use the lotus to symbolize rebirth, love, and compassion.
